Friday’s COVID-19 Numbers: 1,541 New Cases in Maryland, 219 in Montgomery

The Maryland Department of Health reported 219 new COVID-19 cases in Montgomery County Friday morning. This is the second straight day the number of new cases was more than 200. The county has not experienced this since May.

The county’s cumulative case count now stands at 26,996.

The county has a rolling seven-day average of 3.6% for positive COVID-19 tests, which is a lower rate than 15 of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions.

There are currently 13 schools in the state with an outbreak of coronavirus infections, according to the Maryland Department of Health. One school in Montgomery County, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School in Potomac, has two positive cases of the coronavirus infection.

There were four COVID-19 related fatalities reported Friday, bringing the pandemic death toll for the county to 845. Prince George’s and Montgomery counties both report 845 fatalities but P.G. County has 7,074 more coronavirus cases in total since March. Montgomery County has 41 probable COVID-19 deaths that have not been laboratory confirmed, while P.G. County has 24.

Montgomery County health officials are concerned with the increase in coronavirus infections and are focusing on three public health metrics — including daily case rate, test positivity rate, and the rate of transmission.

Each metric is evaluated daily by the health department to understand the risk of transmission. Friday, the daily new cases per 100k residents indicates a very high risk of transmission, the test positivity rate indicates a low risk, and the percent change in cases indicates a very high risk of transmission.

County Executive Marc Elrich has introduced an executive order to reinstate some restrictions to reduce the spread of the virus. The County Council must approve the executive order for the restrictions to take place. The Council tentatively plans to vote on the executive order Tuesday, Nov. 10.

Friday the state recorded 1,541 new infections, bringing its cumulative total to 151,505. This is the largest daily increase in cases since May 19 when there were 1,784 new cases reported. Eleven new deaths were reported Friday, making the pandemic death toll 4,046.

The state reported a rolling seven-day average of 4.37% for positive COVID-19 tests Friday.
