Free Sports Camp Offers Opportunities for At-Risk Youth

The 480 Club has teamed up with Identity Inc., a nonprofit in Montgomery County, to offer a free sports camp for students during the school district’s spring break.

“We organized a camp for 80 kids, those who are at risk, to make new friends and learn new skills,” said Joesph Hooks, founder of the 480 Club.

In addition to enhancing their athletic abilities with volunteer football and basketball coaches, participants had the chance to become inspired by Howard Jones, linebacker for the Chicago Bears of the National Football League, who discussed his success story.

“I learned that if you have a goal keep striving for it,” Devin, Montgomery Village Middle School student, said.

“We partnered with The 480 Club to create activities to keep our young people busy at a time when they’re out of school where they might not have positive activities or a safe place to be,” said Carolyn Camacho, director for Identity.

Hooks, who grew up in Montgomery Village, said he hopes students are inspired by the community’s support.

“I want kids to know that in their world of Montgomery Village, people care about them,” Hooks said. “I’ve grown up here my whole life and I want kids to know the best is available.”
