Four Honored With Living Legends Awards During County’s Juneteenth Celebration
Four residents were awarded with “Living Legends Awards,” during Montgomery County’s 21st annual Juneteenth Celebration.
The ceremony was held on June 16 at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown, according to a news release.
This is the third year that officials have presented residents with the African American Living Legend Award. This year’s recipients are:
- Christine Clarke, historian and community activist
- Wilma Holmes, education administrator and mentor
- Ruby Rubens, fair housing and education advocate
- Odessa Shannon, human service and political pioneer
“All four honorees are distinguished individuals who have dedicated their lives to service, advocacy and selfless acts of kindness to their community,” County Executive Isiah Leggett, who selected the recipients for special recognition, said in statement. “Our County benefits greatly from their commitment to social justice.”
Juneteenth, celebrated across the country, commemorates the events on June 19, 1865 when Union General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to take possession of the state and enforce the emancipation of those enslaved.
