Four Gubernatorial Candidates to Attend Silver Spring Forum Tonight

Maryland Working Families and SEIU Local 500 will host a 3-hour Democratic gubernatorial candidate forum.
Four candidates are expected: Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, former NAACP president Ben Jealous, Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, and state Sen. Richard Madaleno. Kamenetz told the Washington Post he’ll reveal his 2018 political aspirations after Labor Day.
“The forum will introduce Maryland voters to Democratic gubernatorial candidates and their platforms,” according to a news release from Working Families.
Topics for discussion will include raising the minimum wage, union organizing, the state budget and education. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Center, at 1 Veterans Plaza.
None of the four candidates have filed candidacy papers with the Maryland State Board of Elections. Madaleno announced he was running for governor in May. Baker and Jealous announced their candidacies in June.
Maryland Working Families is a progressive political organization that fights for economic issues, according to its website. The Maryland chapter is joined by six others: Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.
SEIU represents employees in Maryland and the District, including those at Montgomery County Public Schools and Montgomery College.
Working Families said the forum will play a critical role in deciding who the organization endorses in the 2018 primary election. Candidates will answer questions collected from the audience as well questions submitted by the organization.
