Former Sheriff’s Office Employee Charged With Theft Scheme

Montgomery County Sheriff Darren M. Popkin has announced that a retired receptionist, Joyce Saunders, 58, of Frederick County, has been charged with conducting a theft scheme while working in the Sheriff’s Office.

The charges filed by the Montgomery County Police Department on August 16 in cooperation with the Sheriff’s Office Internal Affairs Section, allege that over an extended period of time Saunders diverted litigants seeking service of process by the Sheriff to her own private business with inflated costs.

According to a press release issued by the Sheriff’s department, Saunders would charge litigants $80 to $100 for her private service of process, which normally cost $40 from the Sheriff’s Office.

A criminal summons was issued by the District Court of Maryland, with a trial date to be set later.
