The Sweet Smell of Success
As a young girl, Caroline Ta loved to bake. Little did she know that her passion would launch her into her own catering business called Sweets by Caroline.
“My earliest memory of baking was when my mom and I were baking a cake, and I was holding the eggs so tightly because I was afraid of dropping (them) and it ended up all over me and the kitchen. It was a total mess, but since then, I always loved to bake,” Ta said in a 2018 episode of Raptor Tank (a show patterned after ABC’s “Shark Tank”) on MCTV.
In 2015, Ta discovered French macarons and challenged herself to make them. Eventually, word got around about Ta’s macarons, and Snowbots, a dessert and bubble tea shop in Rockville, approached her in 2016 to partner and sell her macarons there.
“Once you have the trust of one customer, they will tell their friends and family, and that’s how you get more people,” Ta told MCM.
While a student at Montgomery College last year, she entered the Raptor Tank competition and won the $2,500 prize money that helped launch her business.
Sweets by Caroline specializes in customized macarons as well as cakes, cupcakes, and cookies for weddings, engagements, parties, and any other special events.
“I feel what makes my business unique is that I am able to customize macarons into animals and different shapes to match the event; every product is made for each customer with each customer in mind,” said Ta.
As her catering business continues to grow, Ta hopes that Sweets by Caroline will get involved with farmers markets, community events, weddings, and partnering with local businesses. Once Ta, now a student at the University of Maryland, graduates with a business degree, she will be able to focus more of her time into her business hoping to turn it into a storefront.
“I love the joy and happiness that I could bring to people through my sweets,” said Ta.
