A team of students from James Hubert Blake High School won the 2014 It’s Academic Superbowl—setting a record with its third consecutive win.

The quiz show format of the competition tests a wide range of knowledge, from math and science to history and current events.

The Blake team competed with 81 local schools to capture the Washington-area title in May 17.   The showed just aired June 28, according to Gboyinde Onijala. The students defeated the Bennett School from Baltimore and Charlottesville High School from Virginia during the championship contest. The final score was Blake 565, Bennett 355, and Charlottesville 420.

The members of the Blake team are Mary Aronne, Jeremy Dowling and Elana Harris.

The It’s Academic team at Blake has been coached for 16 years by English teacher Joseph Caulfield, the first-ever recipient of the Sophie Altman It’s Academic Coach of the Year Award in 2009.  The team’s overall record on the It’s Academic show is 38 wins, 11 losses.

It’s Academic is celebrating its 51st season on NBC4 in Washington, D.C., and is one of the longest-running television quiz shows in the world.
