Food Recovery

Food Recovery Initiative (Video)

The Montgomery County Council on Oct. 9 unanimously gave its support to Council member Valerie Ervin’s initiative that could lead to establishment of a food recovery program in Montgomery County.

At an event to announce the county’s efforts, Ben Simon (speaking) joined Ervin to talk about the Food Recovery Network he co-founded at the University of Maryland with Mia Zavalij.

The group collects food that would otherwise be wasted because it was unused by food services in cafeterias, at sporting events and from special events and then redistributes it to those in need.

Among those at the ceremonies detailing Montgomery County’s new initiative were Kate Garvey of Montgomery County Social Services, Anne Sheridan of the Share Our Strength organization, Pastor Ben Slye of the United Christian Life Center and Pastor Pat Drumming of the Rainbow Family Christian Center.

Ervin held a press conference to promote the food recovery initiative which hopes to assist low income people as well as give a boost to area non-profits. Take a look.
