Folk Trio The Stray Birds at BlackRock (Video)

Pennsylvania folk trio The Stray Birds perform at the BlackRock Center for the Arts on May 2 at 8 p.m. Outstanding songwriting and soaring three-part harmonies, combined with the raw resonant sounds of wood and strings, have made this trio one of the most promising bands on the folk circuit today. The group will perform in BlackRock’s Dance Theater, an intimate venue with flexible seating and a laid-back atmosphere.

Named one of the “Best New Folk Artists of 2013,” The Stray Birds is comprised of Maya de Vitry, Oliver Craven, and Charles Joseph Muench. Maya de Vitry—songwriter, vocalist, fiddler, guitarist and banjo-player for The Stray Birds—has travelled across the United States working as a street musician after having grown up with one foot rooted in old-timey music festivals and the other in symphony orchestras. Oliver Craven (fiddler) is a classically-trained violinist who brings his string skills and vocal stylings to group, and rounding out the trio is Charles Joseph Muensch, a classically-trained bassist who brings his groovy style and powerful vocals to The Stray Birds’ work.

The Stray Birds maintains an ambitious touring schedule and revels in the energy of each room. Hailed by No Depression as “a band destined for global success,” The Stray Birds are slated to perform at the 2014 Celtic Connections festival in Scotland, and will follow that appearance with a month-long tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Their full-length debut, The Stray Birds, was lauded by radio stations and listeners across the country and named to the Top 10 Folk/Americana Releases of 2012 by NPR. Passionate live performances led to appearances on NPR’s Mountain Stage, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Kerrville Folk Festival, and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival. The trio will release their 2nd full-length album this spring.

Tickets are $22 and may be purchased at BlackRock Center for the Arts website or by phone at 240.912.1058 . BlackRock is located at 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown near the intersection of Middlebrook Rd. and Route 118.
