Flavors, Colors, and Heritage: Diversity Celebration in Silver Spring (VIDEO)
It was an afternoon to celebrate differences and similarities. The third annual Riderwood Diversity Fair shared culture, heritage and lots of music.
“We have a tremendous amount of diversity within our community both among our residents and our staff. We’re looking for way to bring different traditions, different perspectives together in one event,” said Chip Warner, executive director at the Riderwood Senior Living Community.
This year’s theme was Around the Rider World, and featured Tai Chi demonstrations, performances by Jonny African Dance, Bisoki traditional dance from Cameroon, a fashion show from members of the Arbor Ridge staff, among others.
The event was sponsored by the Erickson Living Values Team and the Diversity & Inclusion Committee of Riderwood, and allowed employees along with residents the chance to exhibit aspects of their respective ethnicities and cultures by showcasing food, music, photos, traditions and more.
“It’s a great way to build community and it’s a great way to showcase how we are different but also how we are similar,” Warner said.
Attendees were given a passport before entering the fair, and then immersed themselves in different cultures.
“I wish they had one every week. It’s fabulous,” said Terrie Elliott, resident at Riderwood.
Jeffrey Getek, public affairs manager at Riderwood, said the community has more than 2,600 residents and more than 1,000 employees who come from places all over the world.
“Montgomery County is a very diverse county and I think Riderwood reflects that,” Getek said.
