Here are five things to know today, Sept. 12, in Montgomery County:
1. No School: Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have the day off today. It’s a professional day for teachers.
2. Safe Track: Metro’s General Manager Paul Wiedefeld is scheduled to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss Metro’s longest Safe Track surge, which begins later this week and lasts for 42 days.
3. Cell Tower Petition: PHED Committee members are scheduled to discuss telecommunications towers at an afternoon meeting today at the County Council office building. Some Montgomery County residents have launched a petition opposed to a proposed zoning amendment change that might allow the small cell towers in the right of way of some residential neighborhoods.
4. Station Tour: Gaithersburg Mayor Jud Ashman and City Council members are holding an evening work session at 16 South Summit Avenue, to tour the future site of the Gaithersburg Police Department.
5. Rockville Meeting: The Rockville Mayor and City Council members are meeting at City Hall tonight and on the agenda is a presentation to recognize Ruth Hanessian, the owner of Animal Exchange which closed on Sept. 1 after 37 years in business.
ICYMI: September is National Library Card Sign Up Month and staff at Montgomery County Public Libraries are encouraging residents who don’t have a card to sign up for one.
