Five Things to Know Today, Nov. 21, in Montgomery County

Here are your five things to know today, Nov. 21st, in Montgomery County:

1. Fire watch: Montgomery County firefighters have been responding to fallen trees, downed wires and fires as a result of windy and dry weather across Montgomery County. Remember, if you see a downed wire or pole use caution.

2. On the agenda: The Montgomery County Council’s Public Safety Committee is meeting today at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the use of tasers by police officers. Committee members are also expected to get an overview of how sexual assault investigations are handled by the police department. Montgomery County Council President Nancy Floreen has scheduled a 11 a.m. news conference to discuss transportation issues, the Economic Development Corporation and more. At 1:30 p.m., the Council’s Planning Housing Economic and Development (PHED) Committee is scheduled to discuss the Greater Lyttonsville Sector Plan.

3. Animal matters: Officials at the Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) have announced that they are investigating a health matter in the cat and kitten area. The center also needs more blankets and towels.

4. Thanksgiving turkeys: The Manna Food Center is collecting turkeys from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. today and tomorrow. Find out how you can help, here.

5. Dancing with the stars: The 17th annual MCPS Latin Dance Competition begins at 7 p.m. at Strathmore.

In case you missed it: The Walter Johnson boys and girls soccer teams both won the state championship this weekend.

In addition, the Northwest Jaguars are state volleyball champions for the second year in a row.

On the gridiron, Damascus and Quince Orchard have advanced to the state semifinals in football. Congratulations to all!
