Here are five things to know today, May 2, in Montgomery County:

1. Purple Line coalition: A handful of groups — including Action Committee for Transit and the Coalition for Smart Growth — will demand a legal decision and federal funding for the Bethesda-to-New Carrollton transit link. The event begns at 8:30 a.m. in the passageway of the future Purple Line in front of the Silver Spring Library.

2. Grave demonstration: Macedonia Baptist Church and supporters will continue their “Jusice Tuesday” protests, calling for the protection of the Bethesda African cemetery on River Road, at 11:30 a.m. in front of the Montgomery County Council building.

3. Remembering the fallen: The Montgomery County Public Safety Employee 24-Hour Memorial Vigil begins at 10 a.m. County public safety employees, both current and past, will take turns standing watch at the county’s Public Safety Memorial on the grounds of the Public Safety Headquarters in Gaithersburg (100 Edison Park Drive).

4. A homeless woman’s death: “It was a funeral I wish had never happened, a story of a life I wish didn’t end the way that it did,” said Jen Schiller, chief programs officer for MCCH. The life was Kathleen Garlington’s, who died in March, on the streets.

5. Proclamation: The County Council is expected to commemorate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month at 11 a.m. Panelists will share their experiences, give details about their achievements and discuss the issues that are important for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who live in Montgomery County.
