Wind Advisory, MC Students Head Back to School Top Five Things to Know Today, Jan. 23, in Montgomery County

Here are five things to know today, Jan. 23, in Montgomery County:

1. Don’t leave the house without your umbrella. The National Weather Service reports that rain is in the forecast, and a wind advisory is in effect from 5 a.m – 4 p.m. so you may want to secure any outside objects before you leave the house.

2. It’s back to school for students at Montgomery College.

3. At the Council Office Building this morning, rabbis and some clergy members are holding a prayer breakfast with County Councilmembers Marc Elrich, Tom Hucker, George Leventhal, Nancy Navarro and Hans Riemer, and then they plan to visit the Executive Office Building where they will ask the county executive to sign into law legislation raising the minimum wage to $15.  At 11 a.m., Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner is scheduled to hold a news briefing. One of the items he plans to discuss is Marriott’s announcement that the company has selected Wisconsin Avenue for its new corporate headquarters and flagship hotel site.  At 2 p.m., the Council is expected to hold its first work session on the Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan.

4. At Gaithersburg City Hall, the five people who have applied to fill a vacant City Council seat will deliver statements tonight. The applicants include Jose Contreras, Jim McNulty, Yvette Monroe, Jim Rolfes and Laurie-Anne Sayles. Council members are expected to interview the candidates later this week, and make a decision behind closed doors on Feb. 6th.

5. At Rockville City Hall, elected leaders have a packed agenda. City leaders are scheduled to discuss Black History Month, the Draft White Flint 2 Plan, staffing at the Rockville Police Department, the 2015 white-tailed deer annual report and more.
