Here are five things to know today, Feb. 6, in Montgomery County:

1. In Silver Spring, Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot is promoting Maryland’s Energy Tax Free Weekend at an appliance store today and he’s expected to be joined by County Executive Ike Leggett. Tax-free weekend is scheduled for the weekend of Feb. 18 – 20.

2. In Rockville, Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner meets with reporters at 11:30 a.m. for his weekly briefing. He is expected to talk about the Bethesda Downtown Sector Plan and its potential impact on schools, as well as the latest on immigration locally. The Bethesda plan is also the topic of a Council committee meeting today.

3. In Gaithersburg, Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz is being inducted into the Hall of Mayors at tonight’s Gaithersburg City Council meeting. Also on the Council’s agenda, a public hearing to learn more about a development plan for two apartment buildings in the Kentlands area.

4. Making new friends at Jones Lane Elementary School during recess is a little easier thanks to the newly installed Buddy Bench.

5. Get on board: BRT meetings are set for tomorrow and Wednesday to discuss conceptual alternatives for MD 355.
