Here are five things to know today, Feb. 27, in Montgomery County:

1. Takoma Park resident Tom Perez, who is the former U.S. Labor Secretary and a former Montgomery County Councilmember, has been elected the chair of the Democratic National Committee.

2. If you are planning to run for office in 2018, you can file your candidacy at the Board of Elections offices in Gaithersburg beginning tomorrow.

3. Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner is scheduled to meet with reporters at 11 a.m. today in Rockville. The Council’s PHED Committee is also meeting today about the Bethesda downtown plan.

4. Want to be a cop? The application process for the position of police officer opens today and runs thru March 1st.

5. It’s Rare Disease Day at NIH today, and the focus is on research.

One more thing: Registration for spring classes begins today in the city of Gaithersburg for residents, and on March 1st for nonresidents.
