1. School starts in just one week for more than 159,000 MCPS students. The school district still needs donations to provide students in need with backpacks and school supplies.
2. Officials announced Friday natural gas was the cause of the Flower Branch Apartment explosion and fire on August 10. The Long Branch Community Center remains closed for public use to provide emergency shelter to families displaced by the fire.
3. Giant panda cub Bei Bei turns one today. The National Zoo threw a birthday party Saturday with a cake and ceremony.
4. Police are investigating a traffic fatality involving a motorcyclist and a rental truck that occurred Saturday night on University Boulevard and Merrimac Drive.
5. The Comcast Outdoor Film Festival benefiting the NIH Children’s Charities screens The Wizard of Oz tonight at Strathmore.
Two more things: Two county indoor swim centers close today for annual maintenance. Expect shorter hours at the seven county outdoor pools as the summer season winds down.
