Five Things to Know for Sept. 20 in Montgomery County

Here are five things you need to know today, Thursday, Sept. 20, in Montgomery County:

1. State of the City Address: Rockville City Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton and City Manager Rob DiSpirito speak at the Rockville Chamber of Commerce annual state of the city address.

2. Planning Board Meets: Montgomery Planning is scheduled to continue work on a zoning amendment (ZTA 18-11) to allow telecommunications towers in residential zones during the planning board meeting. See the full agenda, here.

3. Child car seat safety check: Stop by the Fitzgerald Auto Mall at 5501 Nicholson Lane from 10 a.m. to noon to have a child car seat inspected. Certified safety technicians will be available to make sure the seat is installed correctly and appropriate for the child. No appointment is required.

4. Happy Birthday: After years of delays and budget overruns, the Silver Spring Transit Center opened on this day in 2015. Lawsuits were settled two years later.

5. Wayne Avenue Purple Line Community Meeting:  Residents concerned with pedestrian safety on Wayne Avenue meet to examine ways to reduce road width, calm traffic, and allow safer pedestrian crossings. The meeting takes place at the Silver Spring Civic Building from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

And one more thing: It’s Yappy Hour tonight at the Elm Street Urban Park in downtown Bethesda. Residents and their dogs can socialize with neighbors, listen to live music and enjoy a barbecue from 6 to 8 p.m. Food, beer and wine are available for purchase from Smoke BBQ and Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery.
