Five Things to Know for Oct. 16 in Montgomery County

Here are five things to know today, Oct. 16, in Montgomery County, Maryland:

1. Bethesda Booming: Weather permitting, folks in Bethesda could hear controlled blasts from 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The explosions are part of the Rockville Pike Crossing Project near Walter Reed and the Medical Center Metro Station. A warning siren will sound about 5 minutes before the blast. Another siren will sound one minute before the blast.

2. Parents Council: The NAACP Parents’ Council meets from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Gaithersburg High School. This event will bring together parents, MCPS teachers and principals to share ideas on cultivating parent engagement and promoting student achievement.

3. County Business: Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner meets with the media at 11:30 a.m. The Council’s planning commission considers measures to protect burial sites in the county. One could require the county Planning Board to maintain a list of burial sites. The other would require the county to respect the sites during the subdivision process.

4. Rockville Budget: City residents are requested to offer their ideas on ways Rockville can save or spend money. Call 240-314-8400 for more information.
