Here are five things to know today, Friday, March 16 in Montgomery County:
1. Community Coffee: Takoma Park Mayor Kate Stewart and Councilmember Kacy Kostiuk who represents Ward 3 meet with community members over coffee today at Mid-Atlantic Seafood from 8 to 9:30 a.m.
2. Public Safety awards: Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford is scheduled to deliver remarks at the 44th annual Public Safety awards luncheon at the Montgomery County Conference Center in North Bethesda.
3. County Budget: County Executive Ike Leggett presented his last budget Thursday which increases spending 2%, increases the school system budget by $75 million and does not increase taxes.
4. National Panda Day: Native to central China, as few as 1,864 giant pandas live in their native habitat, while another 300 pandas live in zoos and breeding centers around the world. The Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute is a leader in giant panda conservation. You can watch giant pandas Tian Tian, Mei Xiang and Bei Bei on the Zoo’s panda cams.
