Here’s five things to know today, Wednesday, Dec. 20, in Montgomery County:
1. New Chief: Takoma Park has a new police chief. Antonio “Tony” DeVaul will begin his first day with the city on Jan. 2, 2018.
2. Blood Drive: The Montgomery County Police Department is hosting a blood drive in honor of Officer Noah Leotta from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Public Safety Headquarters, 100 Edison Park Drive, Gaithersburg. To make an appointment to give blood, please visit. Leotta died in December 2015 while working a holiday alcohol task force. He was struck and killed by a drunken driver.
3. Planning Transportation: The Transportation Planning Board meets from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in D.C. On the agenda is a vote to recommend to local governments which projects that would improve the region’s transportation system.
4. Holiday Tree Viewing: Folks will get the chance to enjoy the lights of the Rockville Square Christmas tree from 5:50 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.
5. Heart Health Class: Diabetes and heart disease often occur together. This class provides information and resources on how to maintain good heart health, which prevents and manages diabetes. The class takes place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the White Oak Community Recreation Center, 1700 April Lane, Silver Spring.
