It was an evening catered to residents and their furry companions.

Montgomery Parks teamed up with the Bethesda Urban Partnership Thursday evening to host the inaugural “Yappy Hour,” a pop-up dog park at Elm Street Urban Park in Bethesda.

“First we wanted to help activate this park,” Rick Ammirato, executive director for the Bethesda Urban Partnership, said. “Also, we’ve heard a lot of people in the community say that there are no dog parks in Bethesda and we wanted to combine our strengths and create something that would be a real asset for the residents and the community at large.”

Organizers said more than 150 people, and their pets, were in attendance.  Live music was provided by Sweet Nova along and local restaurants provided the food, beer, and wine.

“We’re trying to do new and creative events that bring people to our parks because that’s what our parks are about: they’re for the people,” Montgomery Parks Director, Michael Riley, said. “We’re going to keep pushing the envelope until people say ‘enough’s enough’,”.

“This is a great opportunity for residents to get together and do something very special,” Eric Murtagh of Chevy Chase said. “There’s a lot of dogs here that are rescued ones and I think it’s a great opportunity for people to see that these dogs can be a wonderful addition to their families.”

Organizers said they are planning to have more pop-up dog parks next year.
