First Lady Hogan, Senator Van Hollen Honor Domestic Violence Victims

Forty-six people died in Maryland between July 2017 and June 2018 from domestic violence. The Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence (MNADV) held their Annual Domestic Violence Homicide Memorial Service on Monday to honor victims of domestic violence. First Lady Yumi Hogan and Senator Chris Van Hollen were in attendance to honor the victims and discuss legislation in regard to domestic violence.

Of the 46 victims, 26 were victims of intimate partner violence, 15 were abusive partners and five were bystanders. 67 percent on these incidents involved a gun. The names of the victims were read along with their cause of death.

“As a mother and grandmother, my heart breaks for the victims of these senseless tragedies,” said Hogan.

Maryland is ranked 10th in the nation for the highest female homicide rates above the national average.

Senator Van Hollen said, “I will continue working at the federal level to ensure we have the funding necessary to support people impacted by domestic violence and ensure that abusers are brought to justice.”

“Domestic violence doesn’t just affect the victims in the relationship,” said Executive Director of the MNADV Trisha Gentle. As a result, at least 35 children have lost their parents.
