UPDATED Montgomery County firefighters battled a heavy house fire in Gaithersburg Wednesday afternoon.

According to Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer, the single family home is located at Quantum Place.

The fire originated on the second floor of the home and extended to the attic, Piringer said. The owners of the home were away, but several workers in the house escaped and firefighters rescued two dogs, he said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, Piringer said, but the house suffered significant damage.

Piringer said one family and two dogs are displaced because of the house fire. Fire and Rescue officials said two firefighters sustained minor non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for check-up.

Piringer said the cause of the fire was electrical in nature associated with a ceiling fan. Damages are estimated at $250,000.
