Montgomery County firefighters battled a barn fire for several hours on Tuesday night that was ablaze in Laytonsville.

Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer said the fire at a hay barn in the 7300 block of Damascus Road occurred in a non-hydrant area.

According to Piringer, firefighters encountered heavy flames upon arrival. They utilized tanker trucks full of water to extinguish the blaze, he said.

Several vehicles and tractors at the farm were damaged, according to Piringer.

Fortunately, there were no injuries to civilians or firefighter, he said, and there was no livestock involved. Piringer described damage to the barn and its contents as “significant.” Damage is estimated at $250,000. The cause is accidental, undetermined, Piringer said. He said it was likely “spontaneous combustion.”

Firefighters plan to remain on site overnight on fire watch.
