Montgomery County firefighters responded to a fire on the roof of a Montgomery College building, according to Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Pete Piringer.

Piringer said crews found fire in the area of the air conditioning unit from a building that is under construction at the college’s Rockville campus.

“Montgomery College ‘new’ Science [building] under construction, welder’s accidentally ignited insulation/roofing on fire,” he posted on Twitter.

Piringer shared on his Twitter account that construction workers were evacuated, and no injuries have been reported. He said damage is estimated between $75,000 to $100,000.

Crews continue to check the location, the fire official said. As of 2:16 p.m., Campus Drive in Rockville was blocked.
