Fatal Fire in Rockville
UPDATED Montgomery County firefighters are investigating an overnight fire in the 12200 block of Braxfield Court of Rockville that has killed a man and displaced residents.
It happened at 12:30 a.m. on Jan. 16. According to fire officials, the first arriving units reported fire showing from a balcony at the complex and additional resources were requested.
Firefighters located an occupant from the apartment and transported him to an area hospital in critical condition, where he later died. Officials have identified the man as Michael Francis Mercurio, 52.
Assistant Chief Scott Graham said the Red Cross is assisting residents who are displaced by the fire.
According to fire officials, the blaze caused an estimated $40,000 in damages and remains under investigation.
Graham is also reminding residents to make sure their smoke alarms are working and are tested regularly.
