Fatal Car Accident in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County police are continuing to investigate a fatal collision that occurred on July 4 at 1:30 a.m. in the 500 block of East Diamond Avenue in Gaithersburg.

According to police, a 6th District patrol officer observed the operator of an SUV commit a traffic violation. When the officer made a U-turn to stop the vehicle, he observed it accelerate, police said. Shortly thereafter, police said the officer discovered that the vehicle had left the roadway and overturned.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates that a 2003 Toyota Highlander left the north side of E. Diamond Avenue, struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, a fire hydrant, and a pole support cable. According to police, the vehicle then overturned and came to rest across from 503 E. Diamond Avenue and the two occupants were ejected.

Shayne R. Johnson, age 24, of Emory Grove Road in Gaithersburg died at the scene, police said. Jean Marie Pollard, age 28, of Birchtree Lane in Silver Spring was transported to a local hospital, according to police.

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred overnight on July 4 in Gaithersburg.

According to information released by police, at about 1:30 a.m., a patrol officer observed an SUV with its high beam headlights on as it approached North Summit Avenue.

Police said the officer made a U-turn to stop the vehicle. According to police, as the officer made the U-turn the SUV accelerated and turned eastbound on East Diamond Avenue while traveling through a red light. Police said the officer lost sight of the vehicle and when the vehicle could not be located, the officer made a U-turn at Girard Street to begin checking the businesses and driveways along East Diamond Avenue. Police said the officer than discovered the SUV had left the roadway.

Police said the preliminary investigation reveals that the SUV left the north side of East Diamond Avenue and struck a utility pole, a bus stop, a tree, a fire hydrant and a pole support cable. Police said the vehicle overturned and came to rest across from 503 East Diamond Avenue. According to police, the two occupants were ejected.

Police said an adult male was pronounced dead on the scene and an adult female was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not been released.
