Fatal Car Accident

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal car accident that occurred in the early morning hours of March 24.

Shortly after 1 a.m., police said, dispatchers were alerted to an erratic driver by an off-duty police employee. Police were put on the lookout for a gray pick up truck in the area of Route 108 and Hawkins Creamery Road.

Before they could get the driver to stop, police said, the vehicle left the eastbound lane of Route 108 and struck a tree. According to police, the driver, identified as Jose Antonio Ayala (49) of Fullview Court in Gaithersburg, died at the scene.

Family members told police that Ayala was a diabetic and insulin dependent, police said in a news release. Ayala, police said, was last seen by family members at 6 p.m. on March 23 when he left the house for groceries.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact the Montgomery County Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240.773.6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
