Family and Friends Still Search for Missing Gaithersburg Dad and Scientist
Family and friends of a missing Gaithersburg scientist have not given up hope in finding him and have opened a command post at the Fairhaven United Methodist Church.
Martin John Rogers, 54, of the 12900 block of Riffle Ford Court in Gaithersburg, was last seen in Montgomery County on Aug. 21 at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Since that time, police have received multiple calls regarding possible sightings on the towpath of the C & O Canal. Earlier in the week, Rogers was reported to have been in the Cumberland area and the northern portion of the towpath outside of Montgomery County. Aug. 28, Rogers was reported to have been seen at approximately 8:20 a.m. in the area of Edwards Ferry, near Poolesville and Violettes Lock near Darnestown. Video surveillance captured the image of Rogers checking into the Super 8 Motel in Lavale near Cumberland on the day he disappeared.
Sandra Thomas, spokeswoman for the family, said that 40 to 50 people are helping to search for Rogers.
“Don is a brilliant NIH (National Institutes of Health) scientist who worked on rare tropical diseases,” Thomas said. “There are so many missing pieces and bizarre pieces don’t fit the bill of a missing person.” He was also a member of the Fairhaven United Methodist Church choir.
Police and family remain concerned for Rogers’ emotional well-being and physical welfare. Thomas said those who have spotted him say he seems confused. Rogers has three school-aged children.
Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of Rogers is asked to call the police non-emergency number at 301.279.8000 (24 hour line).
