Fall Foliage Reaches Midpoint in Montgomery County

This weekend fall foliage in Montgomery County transitions from the midpoint stage to near peak color, according to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Fall Foliage Report.

“We have a good mix of trees that have started to change,” said Dylan Wagner, a park naturalist at Seneca Creek State Park in Gaithersburg. “We still do have some green, but we are seeing especially around the lake and in the southern region of our park a lot of color change, some reds and yellows, and oranges. It’s starting to look really pretty.”

According to Wagner, most leaves will change over the next week into the beginning of November, although viewing most of the bright colored foliage will be weather-dependent. For anyone who wants to get out and see the jewel-toned leaves, Wagner recommends visiting a state park and seeing what activities they offer.

“The pontoon tour that we do [at Seneca Creek State Park], it’s a fall foliage tour, so we just drive around the lake and we look at the different trees as they’re changing color and talk about some of the science behind that,” she said. “Hiking the Lakeshore trail around the lake, [with] the views of the lake with the fall colors, it’s [also] really really pretty.”

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources fall foliage guide also recommends the C&O Canal Scenic Byway and Historic Park, Great Falls National Park, and the Billy Goat Trail for fall enthusiasts looking for autumn views in Montgomery County.
