Elrich Urges Action on Need for Eviction Prevention Assistance
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich is urging Governor Larry Hogan and Representatives in Congress to act on financial assistance for tenants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During his weekly virtual media briefing on Wednesday, Elrich discussed the end of the eviction protection period which is Saturday. Elrich recently recommended that the County Council appropriate $20 million from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act to expand rental assistance for eviction and homelessness prevention.
“This week will be the end of the protection period unless the Governor does something different… and if this ends the protection period, then shortly the eviction process will ramp up and even though we put $20 million aside, we know that $20 million is not going to be adequate to deal with this,” said Elrich.

With the Courts lifting the stay on evictions after July 25 and the schedule to hear nonpayment of rent cases after Aug. 31, it is imperative that we support tenants. I recognize that $20 million is not the full amount we will need.
