Elrich Reacts to Third Pedestrian Fatality in 2020

Only two weeks into the new year and already three people have died in pedestrian-related collisions on Montgomery County roads.

The latest happened on Rockville Pike, near Wootton Parkway, around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 16. This incident came 24 hours after a pedestrian was hit and killed on Rockville Pike Wednesday night.

These pedestrian fatalities come just a few days after County Executive Marc Elrich announced a $266 million investment in the Vision Zero program to reduce vehicle fatalities and pleas to the community for increased awareness.

The fatalities that happened in MoCo are prime examples of citizens not yielding to laws on the book.

But the latest one should be more of the fault with Ride-On and Metro for having a bus stop that is not near a cross walk.

All buses stops should be required to be a couple feet from a crosswalk to allow pedestrians easy access.

If that means more bus stops along a route – then let it be.

The county needs to install high fencing in the median strip to prevent pedestrians from crossing.
