Early Voting Underway in Montgomery County (Photos)

Early Voting Silver SpringVoters have started to cast their ballots at local polling places across the County as early voting gets underway for the primary election.

It’s the first time that a primary election has been held in June for Maryland voters and some worry that it could mean a low turnout across Montgomery County.

“Early voting is a way of making it easier for people to vote,” said Sen. Brian Frosh, a candidate for Attorney General. “We want everyone to participate. This is a democracy, we want everybody’s views and we want everybody’s votes,” he said.

In Silver Spring, a group of candidates and elected officials kicked off the opening of the Silver Spring Civic Building early voting location, with Maryland candidate for governor Doug Gansler, County Executive Ike Leggett, Sen. Jamie Raskin, D-District 20, and others greeting voters getting an early start at casting their ballots.

“Early voting is a wonderful opportunity for people,” said Maryann Keeffe, president of the Montgomery County Board of Elections. “They’re not relegated to just one day and a defined amount of time. They can come during a week period of time when it’s convenient for them.”

Sen. Frosh said he was casting his ballot during the early voting period, but current Attorney General Doug Gansler said he’ll be voting on Election Day but that he’ll be spending pretty much every day of the early voting period out at the polls in Montgomery County.

“I love Election Day. I grew up loving Election Day so I’ll be voting on Election Day in Bethesda where I live,” Gansler said.
