Drug Sniffing Canine Trials

dog sniffing suitcaseOn October 27 the Gaithersburg Police Department hosted a police canine narcotics certification mini-trial for the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA). The USPCA is the organization that certifies competency in tasks that police canines are trained to perform.

A “mini-trial” limits the number of normal participating area canine teams to 15, in attempts to receive certification through the USPCA in narcotics detection. The trial is made up of two parts:
• Drug detection in vehicles
• Drug detection in buildings.

The event was conducted at both Diamond Elementary School for building searches and the City of Gaithersburg Public Works Facility for vehicle searches.
