Teen Drowns at Community Pool in Rockville

Montgomery County police are investigating a drowning that occurred at a community pool in the New Mark Commons area of Rockville last night.

Officers from the 1st District and Rockville police along with fire rescue units were called to the pool in the 600 block of Tegner Way at approximately 11 p.m. on June 29.

Arriving officers located the victim and initiated CPR prior to the arrival of fire rescue crews, police said. The victim was transported to Shady Grove Adventist Hospital by fire rescue where additional life-saving efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced deceased, police said.

According to police, the investigation revealed that a group of juveniles entered the pool after closing. At one point, the victim failed to resurface, police said. The juveniles called out to a person walking nearby who then called 911, according to an account by police.

Police have identified the victim as Hafis Kareem, age 15, of the 700 block of Monroe Street in Rockville.
