Drive with Caution, Icy Commute

The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds motorists to drive with caution this morning (Dec. 9). Highway crews salted routes and plowed shoulders and merge lanes overnight, and will continue to address potential icy conditions in some areas and remove debris. The small break in the storm last night allowed crews to salt area routes, ramps, bridges and overpasses.

“SHA, emergency responders and utility crews will continue to address State roads, and ask that drivers provide room for trucks,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “Icy conditions are possible through the morning rush hour, and as daybreak approaches, motorists are asked to continue to remain alert.”

SHA reminds motorists to keep these tips in mind:

– Drive at the appropriate speed for conditions.

– Clean off your vehicle for your safety and visibility, as well as for other drivers.

– Use caution when merging at ramps and intersections, especially in areas with a history of flooding; do not to drive through standing water.

– If your vehicle does become disabled, make every effort to move safely from the travel lane and onto the shoulder.

– Remain alert for inactive traffic signals as a result of power outages. Use EXTREME caution and treat it is as a four-way stop – it’s the law.

– Plan your route in advance by using “511 Traveler Information” system.
