Stingrays Swimathon (Photos)

A total of 40 Diamond Farm Stingrays signed up for the swim team’s second annual swimathon, which was held on June 23 at the Quince Orchard Park pool in Gaithersburg.

The swimmers got wet even before they jumped into the pool because of the rain but the weather didn’t deter their efforts to raise money for their team.

“It was so fun to see the determination in the younger kids,” said Carole Valis, the event’s organizer.

Each swimmer paid $10 to participate and many swimmers raised even more money from supporters who sponsored them for each lap completed. Stephen Lang, Nick Van Nevel and Paul Van Nevel swam the most laps (200 laps each), according to Valis.

The participating swimmers raised over $520 for the team and more donations are expected to come in this week, Valis said.

What is the money from the event used for?

“One hundred percent of the monies raised will go to the team,” Valis said. “Recently, a lane rope broke, so this will cover the cost for a new one.”

The event was also sponsored by three local businesses: Suzanne Scharf of ReMax Realty, Perfectly Pressed and Sugar Mama.
