Diabetes Education Classes to be Offered in at Gaithersburg and White Oak Libraries
Montgomery County residents can learn how to manage their diabetes by attending free monthly education classes at Gaithersburg and White Oak libraries starting in March.
According to a news release, the African American Health Program (AAHP), part of the Department of Health and Human Services, is sponsoring the event a long with a Diabetes Dining Club, which hosts monthly food tastings. The education program and dining club are designed to help the African American/Black, African, and Carribbean residents of the County reduce the rate of diabetes and diabetes complications in the community.
The classes will be lead by a nurse and dietitian and will meet for 10 hours over a course of four consecutive weeks. The classes are accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).
The news release states that in Montgomery County, and nationally, African American/Blacks have higher rates of diabetes related emergency room visits and hospitalizations for both acute and longer term complications.
The education classes will start on March 1 in Gaithersburg and April 7 at White Oak.
