Design a Home Rain Garden (Video)

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has created an eleven-minute video called “Rainscapes: Environmentally Friendly Landscapes for Healthy Watersheds” that provides homeowners with step-by-step directions on creating a rain garden in their yard. The video is available  (below) and on the County’s YouTube site.

Through DEP’s RainScapes Rewards program, property owners receive technical and financial assistance to install rain gardens, conservation landscapes, canopy trees, green roofs, permeable pavements, rain barrels, cisterns and dry wells. These techniques reduce the effects of stormwater pollution on local streams and waterways by helping to capture and hold rainfall and then release it in a way that simulates natural drainage, reducing pollution and erosion, replenishing groundwater and recharging streams. Otherwise, rainfall on roofs, driveways, roads, parking lots and patios may end up as stormwater runoff, which can wash pollutants into streams and damage stream banks and habitats.

DEP’s RainScapes program offers rebate up to $2,500 for residential properties and $10,000 for institutional, homeowner association common areas and commercial properties.
