Delegate Will Smith to Fill Vacant Senate Seat, Succeeds Jamie Raskin (VIDEO)

Silver Spring native Will Smith was elected to fill the vacant senate seat in District 20, making him the first African American to represent the district.

Smith who currently serves as a state delegate, was elected during a special election hosted by the Maryland County Democratic Central Committee on Wednesday night in Silver Spring.

A special election was held since former incumbent Jamie Raskin was elected to represent Maryland’s eighth congressional district.

There were four candidates running for the state senate seat. The three other candidates running against Smith included: Del. David Moon, Howard University Professor Darian Unger, and film enthusiast Scott Brown.

Smith received 19 votes, Moon received 8, there was one abstention, Unger received 0 votes and Brown Brown received 0 votes.

The committee’s recommendation will now go to Governor Larry Hogan for a final approval.
