Delaware Beaches Begin To Reopen, But For Residents Only

The weather is expected to be in the seventies Saturday for this weekend’s opening of the beach and boardwalk in Bethany Beach, Delaware.

But Marylanders should not grab their beach gear and head over. The rules apply only to those living in Delaware.

“I want to be very clear to our friends who want to travel here from outside the state. While we hope one day soon to be able to welcome you to our beaches, that time has not yet come. We need to reopen Delaware in a controlled way that doesn’t put anyone at risk,” Gov. John Carney said.

To enforce the out-of-state quarantine as Delaware beaches reopen, Delaware State Police will station troopers at routes typically used by out-of-state travelers. Travelers will be stopped, asked a series of questions and given information about the 14-day quarantine requirement under Carney’s State of Emergency declaration.

Carney decided to allow the opening of beaches along the Delmarva coast on a limited basis, the Town of Bethany will be welcoming locals to its boardwalk and beach as of 12:01 a.m. May 15.

Only exercising and walking on the beach and boardwalk will be permitted. Dog walking will not be allowed until Sept. 30.
