Sports Events to Watch this Weekend
If your weekend is looking anything like mine, there will be a lot of grilling, a lot of family time, and a lot of time spent in front of the TV watching sports. From the AT&T National Golf tournament to the EURO soccer championships, this July 4th weekend (even though Independence Day is on a Wednesday this year) has provided us with a lot of sports events to watch.
For the people who have not seen the poster advertisements on the Metro or on billboards or have not seen the commercials on that thing called television, the AT&T National is being held at the Congressional Country Club at Bethesda this weekend (from today till July 1, this Sunday). There are some notable golfers who will be out there displaying their talents besides the tournament’s host, 14-time major winner Tiger Woods. There is another Top 10 national golfer besides Woods (4th) at the tournament; Hunter Mahan (ranked 10th in the world). There are numerous amount of former major winners such as Angel Cabrera, Davis Love III, Vijay Singh, and Jim Furyk, just to name a few. If any of my readers are interested in going to this event, there are two ways to get tickets: 1. By going online and 2. By calling (800) 594-TIXX. If you want a Friday, Saturday, Sunday gallery pass, it costs $25 per person and you can go any one of those three days. Also, if you want some Clubhouse Access at the National Club, those tickets are $425 per person and available from today till Sunday. The last ticket option that you could purchase is the Jefferson Club Badge which costs $250 per person and is valid all week. If I had some money and if the weather forecast does not call for temperatures to be in the high 90s all weekend, I would definitely go. For those of you planning on going, might I suggest to bring a lot of water and to wear a lot of sun block. For those of you who will be watching the tournament in the comfort of your living room or TV watching area, you can watch the tournament today and tomorrow on the Golf Channel from 3 pm-6 pm ET, with Saturday (3 pm-6 pm ET) and Sunday’s (3 pm-6:30 pm ET) coverage shifting to CBS.
With the Olympics being a month away, you can catch some of the top Olympic hopefuls trying to qualify for the Olympics this weekend at Olympic trials. For those of you interested in gymnastics, there will be coverage from today till Sunday on NBC’s family of networks. For all of my track lovers, there will be coverage starting up again today and tomorrow on NBC SN, then coverage switches over to NBC on Saturday and Sunday. With the Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte rivalry highlighting the swimming trials at Omaha, I kind of only pay attention to the races they are in. The fact that I have missed their first two head-to-head races they had was kind of upsetting. The first race was a 400-meter individual medley, which Lochte pulled ahead at the end to win. The second race which was last night, a 200-meter freestyle, was won by Phelps, only by outouching Lochte at the final second. Their third and final race against one another is tomorrow, a 200-meter IM, and I hope it will be another classic before the drama kicks into overdrive at London next month.
Any soccer and/or tennis fans out there? Well, if you have or have not been keeping up with the UEFA EURO soccer tournament, Spain is already in the Finals, which will be on Sunday on ESPN (2:30 pm ET). There is one last semifinal match between Germany and Italy today on ESPN (2:30 pm ET). Italy’s last game was a battle of penalty kicks against England in which their veteran midfielder Andrea Pirlio proved clutch. Germany is coming off a dominating 4-2 win against Greece. Honestly, I think Germany’s up-tempo style will destroy Italy this afternoon. I’m not a super soccer fan, but from the times I have seen Germany play during this tournament, they have looked pretty dominating and Italy has looked old at times and the way they struggled against England does not bode well for them against Germany. Spain v. Germany on Sunday (hopefully), can’t wait! Don’t forget about the coverage of the second and third round of the Wimbledon tennis tournament on ESPN and ESPN 2. Even though it’s early on, these rounds are where some of the more entertaining matches (such as last year with John Isner’s six set marathon win over Nicolas Mahut proved) take place.
As far as local sports, you can’t go wrong with baseball now. The Nationals are still in first place in the NL East and their offense is in the midst of a hot streak, judging by the 23 combined runs they have scored the past two games against the Colorado Rockies (Coors Field will do that for any offense). The Orioles have been struggling a little bit, but are still in contention in the AL East. While they won their last series against the Nationals, they have been getting creamed by the Angels these past three games, with their pitching being the main reason for their losing streak. The Nationals go to Atlanta to play the Braves this weekend, looking to maintain their lead in the division, while the Orioles are hosting a weekend series against the Cleveland Indians, looking to get back on track.
Well, looks like that is all the time I have for you today, just a couple of things before I go. Nice job Miami Heat with closing out the series last week against Oklahoma City. Now, LeBron James finally has his ring. The NBA Draft is tonight and let us hope the Wizards draft wisely. If Bradley Beal, the 6-4 shooting guard from the University of Florida, is still available I don’t see the Wizards wasting another second in picking him with the third overall pick. Many analysts have said he will be a nice compliment to John Wall in the Wizards backcourt and I hope for the sake of the franchise and their long-suffering fans that it pans out. On a non-sports note, on July 3rd, “The Amazing Spider-Man” comes out. To say that I am pretty pumped about it is an understatement. I remember going to see the first Spider-Man movie in 2002 and he has been one of my favorite superhero characters ever since. There was a little skepticism at the beginning from myself about seeing it, being a reboot of the trilogy that was critically acclaimed and financially successful, but with nothing in theatres until the last Batman movie in the trilogy, “Dark Knight Rises”, roars into theatres in three weeks, might as well see how good this Spider-Man movie is.
