Dahlia Huh, a rising senior at Clarksburg High School, was sworn in as the 37th Student Member of the Board of Education (BOE) on July 1 at 7 p.m., at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville. She was sworn in by Clerk of the Court Loretta Knight.
Huh was elected to serve a one-year term on the Board by middle and high school students of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). She received 69 percent of the vote in the April 30 election in which 77 percent of eligible students cast ballots.
“I’m extremely honored and excited to get started on the Board,” said Huh. “I know students have placed their trust and faith in me to represent their ideas and their voice and can’t wait to do just that!”
Huh has been active in student government at the school and district level. This past school year, she served her second year on the SMOB Advisory Council and her second term as Student Government Association (SGA) vice president at Clarksburg High School. Huh has also served as the Montgomery Regional SGA secretary and as a delegate to the American Youth Summit.
The SMOB is a voting member of the Board of Education, and can cast votes on all items, with the exception of boundary changes, the capital and operating budgets, collective bargaining, negative personnel matters, and school closings. The SMOB receives a $5,000 college scholarship, student service learning hours, and one honors-level social studies credit.
Huh will succeed the current SMOB, Justin Kim, a 2014 graduate of Poolesville High School.
