Crawford Appointed Executive Director Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities

The Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities announced the appointment of Carol A. Crawford as the Commission’s Executive Director/Investigative Counsel. The appointment is effective Jan. 6. Crawford succeeds Steven P. Lemmey who died on Sep. 17, 2013.

The Executive Director/Investigative Counsel is the chief investigator, prosecutor and office administrator for the two-tiers of the Commission: Judicial Inquiry Board Members and Commission Members. The Maryland Constitution gives the Commission the powers to investigate complaints against Maryland judges, conduct hearings regarding such complaints, issue a reprimand and recommend to the Maryland Court of Appeals a more severe sanction. The Commission also educates judges, lawyers and the public regarding the operation of the Commission and what constitutes “sanctionable conduct” and “disability.”

Crawford has served as a team leader and line prosecutor in the Montgomery County, Maryland State’s Attorney’s Office for almost 17 years. She was responsible for the investigation and prosecution of the following types of cases: complex white-collar crime, including elder fraud, securities fraud, mortgage fraud, police-involved use-of-force matters, police misconduct and wiretap investigations. From November, 1993 to January, 1997, Ms. Crawford served as an Assistant Public Defender in the Maryland Office of Public Defender for Montgomery County
