County Salt Stockpiles Should Last, Transportation Official Says

With about nine more weeks of winter and freezing temperatures forecast for next week, Montgomery County’s salt trucks are ready.

The county has about 75,000 tons of salt stockpiled, said Jeff Knutsen, chief of field operations in division of highway service, DOT.

This week, trucks were out Monday afternoon and continued working until about 6 or 7 a.m. Tuesday, he said.

“We were very comfortable for the work we did, and it was a challenge,” Knutsen said.

In this video, Knutsen describes the year so far while standing outside the Gaithersburg salt barn. Inside a front-end loader piles up salt to make room for more salt that was being trucked in from other county salt barns.
