County Reminds Residents to Bring Pets Indoors During Extreme Cold
Due to the extremely cold temperatures predicted to continue over the next several days, Montgomery County Animal Services Director Thomas Koenig is reminding pet owners not to leave dogs tethered, unattended, outdoors in the cold. Leaving animals outside unattended in these conditions may be considered an act of cruelty and pet owners could be charged based on the county anti-cruelty regulations.
The penalty for this violation is a $500 fine.
Animal Services officers say it is important to be careful with all pets during the winter months.
The best advice during periods of extreme weather conditions is to bring your pets indoors. Even animals that are accustomed to living outdoors can be susceptible to the dangers of cold weather, according to county officials.
Livestock animals should have a place to get out of the wind and dry bedding should be provided to protect them from frostbite.
ASD Officers will be on-call, patrolling neighborhoods and responding to any animal-related emergencies.
