County Recreation Summer Camps: The Place to Be

It’s more excitement than kids can endure—the specialty camps we’re offering in our 2015 Summer Camps Guide, coming out today. There’s chess camp, horseback riding, cooking, fashion, theatre, electronic game design, Explorations in Science, and more, including one of our most popular camps, Mystery Academy. TINY TOTS! It’s a big-Big-BIG week for kids ages 2-6 as we have new winter sessions starting in tiny hands crafts, Abrakadoodle, messes and masterpieces, dance, pre-ballet, pre-hip hop, thunder taekwondo, music, Funfit, gymnastics, Coach Doug soccer and tennis, and more! The winter session of our women’s Sunday drop-in basketball program gets underway today at Wheaton High. The session at Walter Johnson High on Wednesday nights starts this week. Give your workouts some punch with our Ultimate Boxing Boot Camp for youth and adults. Starting next week at White Oak, Wheaton, Plum Gar and Marilyn Praisner community centers, plus Bethesda-Chevy Chase High, students go through a boxer’s routine through several skill stations. There’s no physical contact but light sparring with the instructor, a former kickboxing champion with 28 years’ experience. Friday night, our 2015 Rec Zone County Cup Futsal Tournament got underway at Long Branch Community Center. This popular wintertime event features teams of high school-age players from our afterschool Rec Zone programs. Opening night featured 10 games with about 300 family and friends attending. The tourney is played each Friday night until the championship series March 13. Admission is free, so come out each Friday to see the fun and action.

Perfect timing! Our winter session of music lessons gets underway this month with fantastic instruction in piano, guitar and violin. For ages 5 and above, from beginners to advanced, these lessons are available at locations throughout the county and start at just $120 for eight lessons. MARK IT DOWN! The public is invited to participate in a community meeting on the proposed building design of the new Good Hope Recreation Center in Silver Spring. On Jan. 28, 7-8 p.m. at the center, 14715 Good Hope Rd., Silver Spring 20905
