County Readers Can Read Off Overdue Book Fines
When can books get you bucks?
Young Montgomery County residents who read in their local libraries this summer can earn “library bucks” to reduce their overdue fines.
Now through Aug. 3, readers can read off their overdue library fines by registering at their local branch. For every half hour a child and or teen logs reading, they can earn $1 off their overdue fines on their materials.
The last time this Read-Off event was held was in 2009. Although numbers aren’t available for that year, in 2008 when the event was offered systemwide, 2,644 children participated logging a total of 3,120 reading hours at their local branches, according to Carol Legaretta, Montgomery County Public Libraries Public Services Administrator.
“That reduced all of those children’s fines and they were able to enjoy reading at the same time,” Lagaretta said.
Participants can register at any branch and may read any type of material (books, graphic novels, magazines, websites, etc.) in any language.
Readers can track their time at each branch’s Information Desk and collect Library Bucks, and then redeem them at the circulation desk.
Library Bucks cannot be used toward fees for lost or damaged materials, collection, or other charges.
