County, MCPS, Montgomery College to Co-Host Virtual Climate Youth Town Hall
Montgomery College, Montgomery County and Montgomery County Public Schools will co-host a virtual Climate Youth Town Hall on Thursday, Feb. 11 to discuss how the County will address the climate emergency. The event will last from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. via Zoom.
Students attending the event can engage in conversations about climate action and the County’s Draft Climate Action Plan. The event will also feature a student panel and breakout sessions.
The County’s Draft Climate Action Plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2027 and 100% by 2035. The 87 climate actions outlined in the plan will work to achieve the County’s “ambitious climate goals while building a healthy, equitable and resilient community,” according to a Montgomery County press release.
The Draft Climate Action Plan is available for public review and comment through the end of February and will be finalized in the spring of 2021. Additional information on the County’s plan is available online.
“Today’s students are our future leaders and they should play an important role in the fight against climate change,” County Executive Marc Elrich said. “It is critical to include young people in the climate planning process and hear their thoughts on climate action.”
The virtual town hall is open to the public. Students from Montgomery County public and private schools and Montgomery College are encouraged to attend.
